So I heard a story of a truck driver getting fined for smoking in his own cab because he was “smoking in an enclosed work environment”. It’s illegal, in Canada, to smoke in such places, and this is most definitely one of those very vague areas of the law that I can easily see both sides on. I’ll throw in my two cents on the issue. This can be taken two ways, and I think the entire situation is a shit-storm in the making.
I can’t stand being in a smoker’s car. I can’t stand walking through a designated smoking area. I just don’t like the smoke, and I don’t think that if I’m in a typical area that I should have to breathe in their mess. I also don’t think they should be kept from smoking. I don’t think they should be banned from smoking in their own residences either, or their cars. I don’t think we should force people to do something because it’s best for them. That’s a very arrogant attitude to take, and it just pisses me off. If I choose not to wear a helmet, or wear my seatbelt, it doesn’t affect anybody save myself. It’s my choice, and you shouldn’t make a decision for me because it’s in my best interest. Fuck off. Same goes with these smokers. Don’t tell them what they can and can’t do in their own places at their own discretion.
Now I’ve set that point, let’s examine the problem. The guy owns his own cab, drives his own truck, and he’s effectively the only guy using it. It’s his, nobody else’s, and therefore should be allowed to smoke in there until the glass stains yellow. If he were to loan out the cab to another driver, then the law should be enacted because it’s no longer just a cab for him. A non-smoker would then be forced into a smoker’s cab, and that would be horrible. Perhaps designate cabs that are “smoking” and “non-smoking” like some restaurants. Fuck the lawmakers for thinking a law applies to everything. I’ve seen it happen time and time again. They make a law to address a single issue, and it erroneously addresses all kinds of other shit. Damn politicians and their ultraistic mentality. If he owns the cab, is the sole operator, and chooses to smoke, let him smoke. Give a loophole to allow for such drivers their own personal freedom to enjoy inhaling tar. Damn nannies.
